Summary:

The Community Medicine Veterinarian is responsible for providing preventive and basic medical care including spay/neuter surgery to pet dogs and cats living with their families in the LA area and in the care of the Los Angeles rescue community. Services are provided by mobile units parked at designated locations or at our stationary clinic and include examinations, non-invasive diagnostics and treatments concentrating on conditions which can be addressed with reasonable resources and have a high likelihood of a positive outcome.  The Community Medicine Veterinarian will also provide preventive and basic veterinary care, including issuing health certificates, in support of other ASPCA Departments including Community Engagement, Relocation and the Foster Care Program.

 

The Community Medicine Veterinarian performs physical examinations on all spay/neuter patients to ensure their candidacy for surgery and ensures recovery of all patients. This surgeon spays/neuters cats and dogs using the standardized surgical techniques established by the ASPCA.

 

This position may be either regular part-time or fill-in to maintain the daily operations of the ASPCA in Los Angeles when regular full-time staff are unavailable. Our days of operation are Tuesday to Saturday.  The position requires flexibility in schedule, willingness to occasionally work beyond the scheduled end of the work day.  

Responsibilities:

Medical (60%)

  • Provide compassionate high quality preventive and basic medical care to all patients. 
  • Oversee all aspects of veterinary care during an outpatient clinic day including physical examination, diagnostics, treatment recommendations and delivery, prescriptions and discharge information. 
  • Perform pre-surgery physical examinations on all surgical candidates.
  • Perform 25 – 40 high quality, high volume spay/neuter surgical procedures per spay/neuter clinic day.
  • Diagnose and treat post-surgical complications. 
  • Refer and triage cases that do not fall within the Community Medicine parameters of care as appropriate according to One ASPCA Fund (OAF) Coverage Guidelines. 
  • Perform humane euthanasia, when necessary, in accordance with ASPCA policy and CM protocols. 

Customer Service (30%)

  • Communicate respectfully with clients and be able to relay important medical information about patients. Discuss examination and medical test results with owners in order to allow owners to make informed choices for the medical care of their pets. 
  • Counsel owners about end of life and other sensitive medical care decisions.
  • Provide discharge instructions for patients and oversee the dispensing of medications.

Administrative/Other (10%)

  • Document all exam findings, test results and treatment recommendations in medical record data base.  
  • Communicate effectively with Community Medicine staff and other ASPCA staff. 
  • Follow written and verbally communicated ASPCA Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Compensation and Benefits:

The daily (8 hour shift) per diem rate for this temporary position is $880.00 per day during weekday shifts and $1,000.00 per day during weekend shifts. This rate is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to position requirements, qualifications, location, business needs, internal equity, and market demands.

Qualifications:

Ability to maintain good working relationship with clients and staff, be a team player, Background in small animal medicine and surgery, Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office and ability to use paperless medical records and view online calendar and email, English required, Bilingual (English and Spanish) preferred, Excellent work attendance record and interpersonal skills, Interest in animal welfare and population control and serving underserved populations, Must have current California State Veterinary License, Must have Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree or equivalent, Must possess ability to work independently as well as part of team, Must possess ability to work in high-volume, fast-paced clinic environment

Doctorate: Veterinary Medicine (Required)

  

2 years experience in general small animal practice or shelter medicine preferred, 2 years of experience in high quality, high volume spay/neuter strongly preferred
