Summary:

The Community Medicine Senior Veterinary Assistant is an essential member of the medical team that provides preventive and basic medical care including spay/neuter surgery to pet dogs and cats living with their families in ASPCA Focus areas and animals in the care of the rescue community in Miami.

Services are provided at one of our stationary Community Veterinary Centers and include examinations, diagnostics, treatments, minor surgery and basic dentistry concentrating on conditions which can be addressed with reasonable resources and have a high likelihood of a positive outcome. The Community Veterinary Center will also provide high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter surgeries. The SVA is responsible animal handling, assisting the veterinarian with office visits, patient preparation for surgery, monitoring of surgical patients and for the cleaning/disinfecting and general maintenance of medical equipment.
 

The Senior Veterinary Assistant reports directly to the Medical Staff Manager and takes direction from clinic veterinarian and technician regarding medical protocols and patient care. This is a full-time position, approximately 8 hours a day, 5 days a week (40 hours/week). One or both weekend days will be required. The position requires flexibility in schedule, willingness to occasionally work beyond the scheduled end of the work day and occasional flexibility in reporting location.

Responsibilities:

Medical (60%):

  • Assist with out-patient exams by taking patient medical history.

  • Be proficient in animal restraint for various procedures (examples: injections, venipuncture, intubation, euthanasia).

  • Monitor vital signs of sedated and anesthetized patients in preoperative, operative, and postoperative phases.

  • Set up preoperative area and operating room for patient anesthesia, surgical preparation, and sterilization. This includes stocking these areas with necessary supplies.

  • Ensure anesthetic machines, pulse oximeters, scales, and other equipment are functional. When equipment is not working properly report to the Medical Manager.

  • Clean, sonicate, pack, and sterilize surgical instruments.

  • Clean and disinfect endotracheal tubes.

  • Assist with dentistry procedures.

  • Assist with minor surgical procedures amenable to being performed on an out patient basis.

  • Assist with patient exams, perform diagnostic testing. Prepare medications to go home with the client/patient as prescribed by the veterinarian.

  • Provide support and medical services for clients of Community Engagement (CE) and other ASPCA departments as needed including evaluation of animals living in hoarding situations.

  • Work with coworkers to clean and disinfect kennels, transport carriers, equipment, and facility while utilizing appropriate personal protective equipment.

  • Work with coworkers to spot clean operating room, kennels, counters, and floors throughout day.

Customer Service and Training (30%):

  • Communicate in effective and professional manner with public and all ASPCA staff members

  • Know basic veterinary medical concepts, including vaccine protocols and anesthetic risks. Be able to communicate such information to clients.

  • When Veterinarian has documented information about an animal’s condition, adequately explain such information to clients.

  • Participate in the training of CM staff, ASPCA Interns and Residents and veterinary and technical students by coaching, discussion and demonstration.

  • Represent ASPCA in professional and courteous manner at all times.

Administrative/Other (10%):

  • Provide medical information and representation to other ASPCA departments.

  • Adhere to all protocols put forth by Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

  • Follow all written and verbally communicated CM Standard Operating Procedures.

  • Attend all staff meetings and training sessions.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Ability to work independently and as part of team, Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office and ability to use paperless medical records and view online calendar and email, Excellent animal handling skills required, Fluency in English required, bilingual in Spanish and/or Creole strongly preferred, Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds and carry 40-plus pounds repeatedly throughout day with assistance, Must be able to work standing for 8 or more hours., Must maintain open mind regarding changes and be willing to learn, implement, and teach new protocols, Must possess excellent customer service skills., Must possess the ability to work efficiently and calmly under challenging conditions, Strong interest in animal welfare and serving underserved communities

Education and Work Experience:

High School Diploma (Required)

  

1-2 years of veterinary medical or animal husbandry experience
