Summary:

The mission of the Finance Department at the ASPCA is to execute our strategic financial plan that directly impacts our mission to ensure animals live good lives, are valued by society, protected by its laws, and free from cruelty, pain, and suffering.

The Staff Accountant is responsible for the accurate, timely, and efficient recording of revenue, billings, and cash receipts. The person in this role will be responsible for the analysis, revenue, and reconciliation of customer and donor receivable accounts and will support the preparation of audit schedules. They will also assist the Senior Manager, Revenue and Senior Director, Accounting - Revenue with special projects and training new revenue team members with day-to-day tasks.

The Staff Accountant requires a strong knowledge of accounting principles and key controls that ensure the integrity of underlying accounting records.  

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

Daily Revenue Transaction Processing (70%):

  • Record organizational revenue which includes donations, royalty and licensing fees, corporate sponsorship, program income and customer transactions in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles. 
  • Manage revenue records to ensure they are completely recorded and posted. 
  • Assist with the mail management and processing of all incoming checks at the New York 8th Ave office. 
  • Review peer accounting entries ensuring accuracy and transactions are recorded in compliance of internal policies and procedures.
  • Reconcile revenue discrepancies by collecting and analyzing account information.
  • Analyze and research accounting data to ensure financial data quality.
  • Prepare excel deposit forms as needed.
  • Support assigned ASPCA programs with financial matters.

Month End (20%):

  • Work closely with the Reconciliation Specialist to assist with reconciling any discrepancies related to cash deposits and Workday revenue entries. 
  • Collaborate with program liaisons to reconcile revenue account balances between Workday and various program platforms and prepare adjusting entries via Workday as needed. 
  • Constantly update the month-end tasks tracking schedules.

Audit/Year-End and Other (10%):

  • Prepare audit schedules, researches, provides support, and manages audit inquires. 
  • Assist with hands on training for new accounting users.  Assist with maintaining user training guides.
  • Identify measures to improve processing efficiency and report to Senior Manager.
  • Special projects assigned by the Senior Manager of Revenue.

Additional Information: 

This position will be based from our 8th Avenue office in New York City and will require our selected candidate to work regularly on-site to handle mail and checks, with some flexibility to work remotely

Qualifications:

Ability to assess and implement technology, including streamlining and automating processes, Ability to perform effectively and professionally under fluctuating work conditions and in a fast paced highly interactive work environment, Display willingness to make decisions, exhibit sound judgment and contribute to building positive team spirit, Proficiency in Microsoft Office (especially Excel), Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and internal controls, Strong mathematical and computational skills, Strong people and customer service skills, advocate of positive working relationships, Well-organized, extreme attention to detail, multi-tasker and self-directed individual

Education and Work Experience:

Bachelors (Required)

  

2+ years related experience in position of responsibility required, preferably in a non-profit environment, Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting and/or Finance required, Minimum 2 years of hands-on Workday bookkeeping experience is preferred
