Summary:

Overview

As Senior Manager, Instructional Design, you will leverage your passion, innovative spirit, and drive for growth to integrate L&D techniques with top-notch talent strategies. This role on the Learning & Development team will further elevate and optimize our learning ecosystem by cultivating a learning and teaching environment, designing and delivering impactful learning experiences, and producing quality performance resources.

What You’ll Do

The Senior Manager, Instructional Design on the Learning & Development team will further elevate and optimize our learning ecosystem by cultivating a learning and teaching environment, designing and delivering impactful learning experiences, and producing quality performance resources.

This role will manage multiple projects and processes across the department, ensuring L&D provides high-quality development experiences for staff at all levels within the organization. This includes developing programs, creating and facilitating learning initiatives, leading instructional design, serving as a trusted advisory to organizational leaders and subject matter experts and more as outlined below.

  • The Senior Manager, Instructional Design reports directly to the Director, Instructional Design and has no direct reports.

Where and When You’ll Work

  • This remote-based position (which requires travel, as described below) is open to all eligible candidates based within the United States.
  • Ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule, including occasional nights and weekends as needed
  • Ability and willingness to travel up to 10% annually, as needed

Compensation:

The target hiring range is based on where the employee works, which for remote roles is the employee’s primary location of residence, and its respective cost of labor. Starting pay for the successful applicant will depend on a variety of factors, including but not limited to education, training, experience, location, business needs, internal equity, market demands or budgeted amount for the role. The target hiring range is for new hire offers only, and compensation may increase beyond the maximum hiring range based on performance over time. The maximum of the hiring range is reserved for candidates with the highest qualifications and relevant experience. The expected hiring salary ranges for this role are set forth below and may be modified in the future.

  • Zone 1: $77,000 - $82,000 annually
  • Zone 2: $85,000 - $90,000 annually
  • Zone 3: $94,000 - $100,000 annually

Responsibilities:

Responsibility buckets are listed in general order of importance, and include but are not limited to:

Design & Deliver Prioritized Learning Opportunities 

  • Work closely within the People Team and subject matter experts (SMEs) from across the organization to translate the current and future needs of the organization into L&D strategies and practices that help grow our employees, and elevate our work. 

  • Develop programs, teaching formats, and platforms that are results-driven, creative, innovative, and user-friendly using various blended learning methodologies and delivery methods; including but not limited to: storyboards, facilitator guides, instructor-led classroom, panels, self-study job aids, structured peer communities, and evolving technology.

  • Manage the L&D project plan process from inception to launch for key strategic programs and learning initiatives, including; conducting a stakeholder needs assessment, identifying task force members and SMEs, designing/developing curricula using proven instructional design methodologies, piloting programs, launching across the organization, and continuously evaluating program effectiveness.*

  • Partner with the design team on the development of graphics, video, and additional training material. 

  • Leverage expertise in adult learning theory, instructional design and learning technologies to create and facilitate key internal and external learning initiatives that link back to departmental and organizational strategy and impact, championing leaders at all levels of the organization. 

  • Provide guidance, training, and support to other instructional designers.

  • Ensure all training and tools drive a greater return on invested capital and make recommendations for opportunities to further this objective to the Sr. Director, Learning & Development.

  • Research industry trends/technology/best practices and proactively leverage external L&D metrics and analytics to inform and reimagine curriculum decisions & designs and elevate our capability to the next level.

  • Lead the evaluation process for training experiences through assessments, surveys, and feedback. Using internal  trends and data to recommend opportunities to continuously iterate and adapt.

  • Model exemplary presentation, instruction, and facilitation skills focused on building learner awareness, application, and behavior change. 

  • Support the development and integrations of all learning technology platforms.

  • Carry out the process of development and implementation of Instructional Design tools and systems for developing training.

  • Coach SMEs through the instructional design process ensuring consistency and quality in all of the ASPCA's learning experiences. 

 

Change Management & Communication

  • Serve as a trusted consultant to teams and individuals through root cause exploration, charting opportunities, challenging limiting beliefs and framing possible strategies.

  • Develop exceptional relationships and strong lines of communication across all departments and divisions to ensure authentic, effective, ongoing feedback and collaboration.

  • Build strong communication, communication strategies and project plans to increase organizational awareness and facilitate timely completion of all work.

  • Identify communication channels and partner in the creation of written communications to project stakeholders, end users, and other project participants.

  • Model Emotional Intelligence through self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management.

  • Work closely with the Director, Instructional Design & Delivery, to ensure there is synergy and consistency in learning experiences.

  • Maximize LMS adoption and minimize resistance from all key stakeholders. 

Education and Work Experience:

  • High School diploma /GED or equivalent professional experience required; BA/BS preferred

  • 6+ years of professional work experience required

  • 5+ years of learning project management experience and proven ability to establish and meet deadlines and balance multiple shifting priorities

  • 2+ years of experience in Instructional Design or equivalent education/experience

  • At least 2 years of experience with Articulate products and Adobe CC required

  • At least 2 years of experience designing and maintaining instructional design processes and tools.

  • At least 1 year of experience with train the trainer, mentoring, coaching, and/or developing other instructional designers.

  • Ability to lead the design process for different types of learning with staff partners, from idea generation to program development.

  • A combination of People experience in the following areas is a plus: organizational design, program management, systems design and implementation, talent management, data analysis, leadership/staff development, or career pathing. 

  • Professional Certifications related to Organization Development/L&D is a plus.

  • Experience Launching an LMS platform is a plus

Qualifications: 

  • Proven competence in instructional design that showcases understanding of evidence-based learning design, with ability to creatively design, deploy and operationalize innovative learning experiences and resources in various modalities.

  • Ability to lead the design process for different types of learning with staff partners, from idea generation to program development.

  • Willingness to work with AI (and similar technologies) within ethical boundaries.

  • Comfortable and energized working in an ambiguous environment with demonstrated ability to achieve clarity for next steps and exercise decision-making skills

  • Must have excellent communication skills (both oral and written)

  • Ability to work well under pressure, adapt to changing circumstances, make decisions quickly, speak diplomatically to address difficult conversations and juggle multiple priorities simultaneously while meeting challenging and changing deadlines

  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex operations, preferably within the L&D or HR field

  • Self-starter who identifies problems, evaluates options, and initiates solutions

  • Ability to navigate horizontally in the organization and create collaborative, cross-functional solutions

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with others with demonstrated abilities in group facilitation, problem-solving, and consensus-building

  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as a member of a team

  • Ability to lead a conversation by asking specific questions to uncover valuable insights, leverage keen listening skills to explore and translate what isn’t always spoken, quickly analyze information, distill and prioritize next steps to move the work forward.  

  • Ability to focus on the people side of change, including changes to business processes, systems, technology, job roles, and organization structures.
